Magick & Ritual

About Energy & Magick

Osireion recognizes that each of us has an extraordinary ability to raise and move power. We hold this ability as a sacred trust, and commit always to use it for good, as best we understand that, and never to harm another with our spiritual work. We typically raise energy through music, dance, chant, toning, and directed inner intention. “Raising energy,” or moving towards the place and time that we can intentionally direct power towards a positive, productive purpose, is something that begins from the time we start our ritual preparations, though it also is normally focused during some activity of the ritual “working.”

Modern tradition tells us that this ability to achieve intention through energy work is a definition of magick. The ability and intent to perform magick is what makes us witches. Osireion understands that all magick may be seen as a form of healing. As individuals called to service, we hold sacred our responsibility to do what we can to heal each other, heal our communities, and heal the earth. Therefore, every ritual we perform is, in effect, a healing ritual.

About Ritual
When we share ritual, we follow the principle that one must enter the circle in perfect love and perfect trust. If we do not love and trust the other members of the circle, either we should not enter, or we should attempt to discuss issues with the group in advance. Our ritual process is generally as follows:
Plan - Determine ritual purpose, timing, place and who will be involved/invited. Agree on who will serve what roles. A useful format we have used is for individuals to take turns being the “ritual leader,” leading the creation of a ritual for and with the group, then serving as priest/ess for the ritual. The ritual leader should enlist others for roles needed in that particular ritual, organize logistics, and generally be in charge for that ritual, delegating where appropriate and needed.Prepare - A ritual leader will do her/his own personal preparation to step into the role of priest/ess, go into the circle ahead of the group, spend time imagining into being the sacred space, calling on personal deities/helpers/guides to assist him/her.

Mark and clear sacred space by censing, asperging, salting and carrying fire around the circle clockwise.

Set sacred intention for each person entering. We may greet each person, challenge them, cense, anoint with oil, present with a flower or token or holy kiss, or any other creative expression which demarcates the point at which participants leave behind the mundane and enter the sacred space, time and family.

Everyone who enters forms a circle. This is not a rule, but our normal custom.

Musician(s) - we use music and sound as sacred tools. Ideally, one participant serves as musician for a ritual, providing at least a drum beat, shaker beat, bells, toning, or other sound magick to help set sacred space. That person should enter circle before others and perform as others prepare and then enter sacred space.

Establish sacred space and time - Call quarters. What does this mean? For some it is calling the traditional “guardians” of the directions, in the tradition of ceremonial magick. For some it is calling the spirits or essence of each element to lend us their powers. For some it is an invitation to spirits, ancestors, guides, guardians and/or other non-physical friends to join our group. In essence, it is an acknowledgment that we are not alone, that we appreciate the support and assistant of benevolent powers. It is also following a very old pattern which has been used by many different groups, many cultures, the world over, and therefore allows us to participate in and add to the strength of that energetic pattern.

Osireion does not prescribe set language for quarter calls. We rely on what we have learned and taken into our being over many years about characteristics we associate with each direction, and our understanding/belief that when we call, only good may respond to our call.

Associations, simply put:

East-Air: intellect, clarity, reasoning, openness, honesty, birth, beginnings, Djehuti, sia

South-Fire: passion, drive, creativity, purging, active intent and living, Sekhmet, heka

West-Water: emotion, cleansing, inner consciousness, death, endings, Asar, maat

North-Earth: foundation, renewal, life cycle, strength, Auset, rostau

Set sacred boundaries by casting circle. The most basic way to do this is for the priest/ess to walk around the circle and visualize a wall of energy. Some like to walk inside the circle of participants, some like to walk outside. The visualized boundary should be outside, naturally, and some of us prefer to imagine a sphere (3-dimensional), rather than just a circle (2-dimensional).

Note that in early ceremonial magick this circle had connotations which Osireion does not embrace, e.g., protection from evil spirits, creating a space into which to call a daimon which will do the magician’s will.

Rather, we set a circle as a sanctuary, a place of healing, communion with others, safety, empowerment – a place where all things are possible. Once circle is set, it is normally inappropriate for people to enter or leave, though we do not prohibit comings and goings, as long as they are necessary and done with respect, and without disrupting the ceremony in progress.

When the circle is set, we say: “The circle is cast. We are between the worlds, beyond the bounds of space and time.”

Stop music (unless and until a circle grows large enough to have people willing to continue throughout ceremony, as appropriate)

Do the working of the ritual - This is where we are especially creative. “Working” may consist of one, some, all or none of the following:

  • Music, dance, chant, song, toning.
  • Healing work.
  • Spellwork.
  • Directing energy to a particular need or needs known at that time.
  • Re-enactment of a sacred story or other ritual theater
  • Commitment and initiation ceremonies.
  • Drawing down of a deity or guide to speak to the group.
  • Communion, also called “cakes and wine” in the Wiccan tradition

Close ritual - Again, we are creative here, but normally include the following:

  • Release of energy that we have built during the working.
  • Embrace of the group as an expression of perfect love and perfect trust.
  • Opening of each quarter and then the circle.
  • Priest/ess states that our ritual is ended and the circle open, and that we go in peace and with joy, to live and to serve others.

A Basic Ritual

Set altar if and as desired.

  • Light candle and incense.
  • Lay on the altar a dish of water, and a food or other offering.
  • Address the four cardinal directions:
  • (Facing east, lifting water) Awake in beauty, awake in peace, holy one in the East, friends, guides and element of water, manu. We open the way for you em sia.

(Facing south, lifting candle) Awake in beauty, awake in peace, holy one in the South, friends, guides and element of fire, aakhut. We open the way for you em heka.

(Facing west, lifting incense) Awake in beauty, awake in peace, holy one in the West, friends, guides and element of air, ament. We open the way for you em maat.

(Facing north, lifting offering) Awake in beauty, awake in peace, holy one in the North, friends, guides, and element of earth, rostau. We open the way for you em sa.

    • Cast circle or set sacred space, speaking these words:  I/we cast this circle, establish this sacred space, a place of safety, healing, peace and transformation. We enter the temple now!
    • Addressing the gods:

The following may be spoken when alone, or spoken responsively in a group

Great ones on the barque of Ra, I see you and know your names.
Look on me now and know my name.
My heart is straight, my soul filled with light.

I come bearing truth and joy as my offerings. As I enter the temple –I am found worthy by Asar.

I am glad of heart with Het-Her.

    I am wise as Djehuti.

    I am refreshed by Nebt-Het.

    I am protected by Heru.

    I am sustained by Geb.

    I am instructed by Auset,

    I am accompanied by Anpu.

    I am healed by Sekhmet.

    I am established by Set.

I am the balance of Maat.

I am the beauty of Nut.
